A studio workshop built around guided glaze making and understanding how glazes behave. You’ll work with your own glaze samples and see how different materials shape surface, texture, and colour.
You choose what you want to explore, working from basic food-safe glazes to special-effect surfaces like oil spotted or lichen glazes. All samples are fired in the studio kiln and reviewed together after firing.
Program of the workshop:
- Day 1 (2 hours)
Understanding how glazes are built and how they behave. We’ll look at how to choose materials, make a glaze, and modify it with more confidence - Day 2 (2 hours)
Building your glaze recipe, mixing and applying your own glaze samples, exploring small variations and glaze behaviour
- Day 3 (2 hours)
How colour works in glazes
- Day 4 (3 hours)
Building your glaze recipe, hands-on colour testing through samples and variations, working directly with colour in glazes
- Day 5 (1 hour)
Group review of all fired samples, observing results and discussing next steps for working independently.
What is included:
- Guided glaze workshop sessions throughout the course
- Glaze materials and test tiles
- Firing of all glaze test samples
- FFP2 mask and gloves during practical sessions
- Additional materials for independent study
Why work with your own glazes: You don’t need to make your own glazes, but understanding how they work and how to control them helps you get better results, even with commercial glazes. It also opens space for more personal surfaces and textures, and a clearer visual language.
